Plath Lab Alumni: Diverse Paths, Global Impact

The reach and impact of the Plath lab is global and multifaceted. Our alumni have ventured into various countries, industries, and professions. Some have continued their academic pursuits, others have become scientists and managers in biotech, consultants, and sales professionals. A few have continued in healthcare as doctors or have started their own companies.

Kate is a student at Notre Dame High School and was learning molecular and cell biology in the lab with Sammy in the summer of 2024.

TanTiao Tan

Tiao was an undergraduate student at UCLA majoring in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology with a minor in Bioinformatics. She was working with Sammy on X-inactivation and reprogramming.

ShahbazianLilit Shahbazian

Lilit was a fourth-year UCLA MCDB student in the lab who conducted mitophagy and reprogramming experiments.

DrorIris Dror

Iris was a postdoc in the lab studying the regulation of gene expression, chromatin state, and 3D genome organization during early human and mouse embryonic development utilizing stem cells as a model system. Iris was specifically interested in the action of the long noncoding RNA XIST and identified new functions for the RNA. She moved on to run her own lab.

StantonAlexander Stanton

Alex was a Ph.D. student at Tufts University working in the lab of Martin Pera at The Jackson Laboratory to uncover links between karyotype and embryonic stem cell states. In the Plath lab he was studying the understanding X-chromosome inactivation in human pluripotent stem cells.

BerrinLior Berrin

Lior was a high school student (Milken Community High School) in the lab until 2024 and went on to Brown University for college.

McKeeRobin McKee

Robin served as lab manager of the Plath lab from the beginning until 2023. Now, Robin is the Laboratory Safety Officer of the Department of Medicine at UCLA.

FengBenjamin Feng

Ben was a UCLA undergraduate student majoring in Molecular, Cell and Developmental biology, with double minors in bioinformatics and biomedical research. As undergraduate researcher, he worked with Amanda Collier. He moved on to get his Ph.D. at MIT.

TuWilliam Tu

William was a postdoctoral scholar in the lab until 2022. He is now a Scientist at Altos Labs in San Diego.

CarneyMolly Carney

Molly was an undergraduate student in the lab working with Will. She went on to graduate school at MIT.

KimBoseon Kim

Boseon was a postdoctoral scholar in the lab until 2022. She is now a Scientist at Amgen.

TranTracy Tran

Tracy was a postdoctoral scholar in the lab between 2021-2022.

GressierCharlotte Gressier

Charlotte was a master’s student in the lab in 2023 who came over from France and worked with Amander Collier.

MarkakiYolanda Markaki

Yolanda was a project scientist in the lab until 2022. She is now a Lecturer at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom. She won the 2022 Boyer/Parvin Award at UCLA.

DamodarenNivedita (Nivi) Damodaren

Nivi was a graduate student in the Plath lab until 2023 who was co-mentored by Dr. Douglas Black at UCLA and worked on understanding the role of RNA-binding proteins in sequestering RNA onto chromatin. She moved on to become a Postdoctoral Fellow at Merck.

Kaemin was an undergraduate student in the lab 2022-23.

Anya was a UCLA MD/PhD student performing her graduate work the lab until 2022 and subsequently continued her medical training at UCLA.

HeinkeleFranziska Heinkele

Franziska was a master’s student in the lab in 2022 who came over from Germany and worked with Amander Collier.

DengWeixian Deng

Weixian was a graduate student in the lab until 2022 co-mentored by Dr. James Wohlschlegel,and was a recipient of the Fowler Award of the Molecular Biology Institute at UCLA. He became a Scientist at Amgen.

ChauAnthony Chau

Anthony was a graduate student in the lab until 2022. He went on to become a Scientist at Illumina.

ChitiasviliTsotne Chitiasvili

Tsotne was a graduate student in the lab until 2022, co-mentored by Dr. Amander Clark at UCLA, and a recipient of the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation PhD fellowship. He became a Scientist at Calico Life Sciences.

SüsserSebastian Süsser

Sebastian was a master’s student in the lab in 2020 working with Amanda Collier. He returned to Germany to complete his masters.

AllisonThomas Allison

Tom was a post doc in the Plath lab until 202. He took a job as Field Application Scientist at STEMCELL Technologies.

Pandya-JonesAmy Pandya-Jones

Amy was a Helen Hay Whitney Foundation postdoc in the lab until 2021 and was awarded the inaugural Suzanne Eaton Award at UCLA. She moved on to become a Senior Scientist at Amgen.

Rohan was a undergraduate researcher in the lab until 2021 working with Tsotne Chitiasvili.

TanShawn Tan

Shawn was a graduate student in the lab until 2021. He moved to Singapore to become a research fellow at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) in Singapore.

LuIvy Lu

Ivy was an undergraduate student in the lab until 2021 and worked with William Tu.

Jarrett was a graduate student in the lab until 2020. He moved on to a position at Bioarkive in San Diego.

Jessie was an undergraduate student in the lab working with Yolanda Markaki until 2021. She left for her graduate school at Yale.

Johnny was an undergraduate student in the lab working with Yolanda Markaki until 2021. He left for graduate school at UC Berkeley.

Yi (Peggy) was an undergraduate student in the lab working with Yolanda Markaki until 2018. She is now attending graduate school at UC Berkeley.

Kent was an undergraduate student in the lab until 2018 working with Justin Langerman. He went on to work at Kite Pharma.

Yihao was an undergraduate student in the Plath lab until June 2017. He then attended graduate school at Rockefeller University working in the lab of Elaine Fuchs.

Martina was a postdoc in our lab from 2015-2017, then became Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Chute lab, and later founded a company (Sardona Therapeutics).

Jordan was a high school student volunteer from Milken Community School from 2015 to 2017. He went on to Stanford University for his undergraduate studies.

Keziah was an undergraduate student in the Plath lab until 2016 and worked with Amy Pandya-Jones.

Stefan was a Master’s student in the Plath Lab in 2016. He went back to Europe for his PhD.

Elena was a CIRM Bridges Master’s student in the Plath Lab 2015-2016 and is went on to obtain her Ph.D. student at UCLA in the MBI program.

LiVictoria Li

Victoria was an undergraduate student in the Plath Lab majoring in Biochemistry. She worked with Anna Sahakyan.

BonoraGiancarlo Bonora

Giancarlo was a bioinformatics graduate student in the Plath Lab, co-mentored with Dr. Jason Ernst. He defended his PhD in 2015 and next became a postdoctoral fellow in the Genome Sciences Department, University of Washington, in the Noble Lab.

PasqueVincent Pasque

Vincent was a postdoctoral fellow in the Plath Lab until 2015. He moved on to a position as Assistant Professor at the University of Leuven in Belgium.

SerizayJacques Serizay

Jacques was a master’s student in the Plath lab until 2015. He returned to Europe after for his PhD at the University of Cambridge.

JackowayJess Jackoway

Jess worked as a high school student (Milken Community High School, Los Angeles) in our lab between 2012-2015. He was supervised by Sanjeet Patel.

PappBernadett Papp

Bernadett was a postdoctoral scholar in the Plath Lab until 2015. She moved on to become an Assistant professor at the University of Florida Gainesville.

UyedaMolly Uyeda

Molly was an undergraduate in the Plath Lab until 2015. She moved on to get her PhD at Stanford University.

ManciaWalter Mancia

Walter was an undergraduate in the Plath Lab until 2015 and worked with Amy Pandya-Jones. He moved on for his PhD at UCSF.

PatelSanjeet Patel

Sanjeet joined the Plath lab for his PhD as an MD and completed his PhD in 2014. He continued with his medical training after leaving the lab.

SellamiNadia Sellami

Nadia completed her graduate studies in the Plath lab in 2013 and moved on to work for DeciBio, a market research and strategy consulting firm in Los Angeles.

DenholtzMatthew Denholtz

Matthew was a graduate student in the lab. He defended his PhD in 2013 and moved on for a postdoc at the University of California, San Diego, in the Murre Lab. He now works at Fate Therapeutics.

HoRitchie Ho

Ritchie completed his graduate studies in the Plath lab in 2013, he then moved on to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, becoming a postdoc at the in Clive Svendsen’s lab. Later he became Assistant Professor at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Anu was a CIRM Bridges master’s student in the Plath lab from 2012-2013 and is Core Director at the UCLA Broad Stem Cell Research Center.

Jan was a medical student at UCLA and was working with Sanjeet Patel between 2012-2013.

ChinMark Chin

Mark was a postdoc in the Plath lab from 2007-2012. He now is Director Quantitative Biology and Data Sciences, Capsida.

MinkovskyAlissa Minkovsky

Alissa was a MD/PhD student in the Plath lab and completed her graduate studies in the lab in 2012; after she continued her medical training at UCLA. She now is Executive Medical Director, CRISPR Therapeutics.

SchmidtRyan Schmidt

Ryan was a MD/PhD student in the Plath lab and completed his graduate studies in 2012, He next finished his medical training at UCLA as part of the MSTP training, and now is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pathology Keck School of Medicine USC.

Elysse worked as undergraduate student in our lab (2011-2012), on a project with Alissa Minkovsky.

Shahrad was an undergraduate student working in the lab from 2009-2011 working with Mark Chin. He moved on to medical school at Tufts Medical School in Boston.

Jason was a graduate student in the lab and left in 2011. He went on for a postdoc in the laboratory of Lorenz Studer at the Memorial Sloan Cancer Center in NYC and now is faculty at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
